What to expect

A peaceful goodbye, gently explained

However overwhelming this moment feels, the goodbye itself is calm and tender. Knowing what will happen can bring real comfort — so here is what a visit with us is truly like, step by unhurried step.

At home

How an in-home goodbye unfolds

For many families, the kindest farewell happens at home — no car ride, no waiting room, just the safety of a familiar place and the people who love them most.

  1. The first phone call

It begins with a gentle conversation. Call whenever you're ready and a caring member of our team will listen, answer your questions, and talk through what's ahead for your dog or cat. There is no pressure and no decision you must make on the spot.

  2. Choosing a time

Together we'll find a time that suits your family — perhaps a quiet afternoon, or an evening when everyone can gather. We'll let you know roughly how long to expect, usually around an hour, so nothing ever feels rushed.

  3. Preparing a peaceful space

There's very little you need to do. You might set out a favourite blanket or bed, a patch of sun, or simply your own lap. Some families light a candle or play soft music. The only thing that matters is that your companion feels safe and at home.

  4. A gentle sedative first

When you're ready, we begin with a gentle sedative. Your dog or cat drifts into a deep, comfortable sleep — fully relaxed, free of pain and worry, often dozing off in the arms of the person they love most. Nothing happens until they are completely at peace.

  5. A quiet, painless passing

Only once your companion is sound asleep do we proceed, with a final, painless injection. It is peaceful and unhurried. Most families tell us afterward that it was far more gentle than they had feared.

  6. Time to say goodbye

Afterward, there is no need to hurry. Stay with your dog or cat for as long as you wish — a few quiet minutes, or much longer. We follow your lead entirely, and then gently guide you through aftercare so you never have to face the practical parts alone.

You are always in control

There is never a wrong question, and nothing happens before you say you’re ready. We carry the medical part gently, so you’re free to simply be present with your dog or cat — holding them, speaking softly, and saying goodbye in your own way.

At our clinic

A private comfort room, whenever home isn’t right

Sometimes a goodbye at home isn’t the right fit, and that is completely okay. For families who prefer it, we offer the same gentle farewell in a quiet comfort room at Skillman Animal Clinic.

  • No waiting room. We arrange a calm, private space away from the busier parts of the practice, so you arrive to peace rather than a crowd.
  • The same gentle process. As at home, we begin with sedation so your dog or cat is fully relaxed and comfortable before anything else.
  • All the time you need. Bring a favourite blanket or toy, hold them close, and stay as long as you wish — before and after.
Gentle answers

Questions families often ask

If something is on your mind that isn't here, please just call. There is no question too small, and we're always glad to talk it through.

How long does a visit usually take?

Most in-home visits last about an hour. We never watch the clock — the time is yours, before and after, and we move only at your pace.

Can the whole family and our other pets be there?

Absolutely. Everyone who loves your dog or cat is welcome — children and adults alike. Other pets in the home may stay nearby too; many families feel it helps them understand, in their own way, that their friend is at peace.

Can children be present?

Yes, if that feels right for your family. Being part of a gentle, honest goodbye can help a child grieve and heal. We're glad to talk it through with you beforehand, and our grief resources include gentle guidance for helping children say goodbye.

How does payment work?

We'll explain everything clearly and kindly when you call, with no surprises. Arrangements are handled simply and discreetly, so that on the day itself you can focus entirely on being with your companion.

What happens with aftercare?

You're never asked to decide everything at once. We'll gently walk you through your options — including respectful cremation and the return of ashes, and keepsakes like a paw print or a lock of fur — and handle the arrangements for you.

A caring voice, any time
